My Go-to- Carry-On Luggage for Stress-Free Travel

It’s 11:49 PM at the airport, and in about an hour I’ll be squeezing into another red-eye. I’m exhausted, it’s way past my bedtime, and the iced coffee in my hand is doing some seriously heavy lifting. But despite feeling half asleep, there’s one thing I didn’t have to think about before leaving home.

What luggage to bring.

Without even thinking, I grabbed the same carry-on and the same weekender I’ve traveled with for years. They’ve been with me through airport sprints, delayed flights, road trips, and enough adventures that they’ve basically become part of the routine.

My travel setup is surprisingly uncomplicated:

That’s it. I haven’t checked a bag in quite some time, and honestly, I don’t miss standing around baggage claim hoping my suitcase arrives with everyone else’s.

My Carry-On: LUGGEX 20″ Front-Opening Suitcase

I’ve been using the Luggex 20-inch carry-on for a while now, and it’s quickly become my favorite travel companion. At 22 × 15 × 9.5 inches, it’s the perfect size for a carry-on, and I haven’t had any issues fitting it into the overhead bin on domestic flights. The polycarbonate shell has held up well after multiple trips, and although the suitcase weighs about 9 pounds, it feels sturdy without being cumbersome to maneuver.

That front pocket deserves its own mention. Instead of opening the entire suitcase at the gate, I can grab my laptop, iPad, or travel documents in seconds. If you’ve ever needed to pull out electronics during TSA screening or while waiting at your gate, you’ll appreciate how much easier this makes things. The compartment easily fits my 16-inch laptop, and an 11-inch iPad. Once you’ve experienced that kind of convenience, it’s hard to go back to a traditional carry-on.

Inside, the suitcase is thoughtfully organized with compression straps, a zippered divider, and mesh pockets that keep everything from shifting around. It starts with a 38-liter capacity and expands to 42 liters, which has been more than enough space for four to eight days of clothing, especially when I’m using packing cubes. Add in the smooth 360-degree spinner wheels and a TSA-approved lock, and it’s a carry-on that feels like it was designed by someone who actually spends time in airports.

My Personal Item: SwissGear Weekender Tote

I picked up the SwissGear Weekender Tote from Costco almost on a whim, and it has become the one bag I refuse to travel without.

Instead of digging around inside a floppy duffel bag, it opens almost like a small suitcase, making it incredibly easy to see everything at once. At 18 × 10 × 13 inches, it’s compact enough to slide under the seat on most flights, yet surprisingly spacious for everything I need during a travel day.

The padded laptop sleeve comfortably fits a 15-inch laptop, keeping it separate from everything else, while the removable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry on the shoulder. My favorite feature, though, is the fully padded zippered compartment on the bottom. Depending on the type of shoes, I’ve been able to fit up to four pairs, and it acts as a good separator of clothes and shoes. It’s one of those simple features that keeps everything cleaner and far more organized.

The wide wire-frame opening makes it easy to pack and organize. The separate bottom compartment keeps shoes or toiletries away from clean clothes.

The trolley sleeve on the back is another detail I didn’t know I’d appreciate so much. It slides securely over the handle of my carry-on, so instead of juggling two bags through the airport, they move together as one. Small touches like the easy-to-clean interior lining and protective feet on the bottom make it feel like a bag that was designed for frequent travelers, not just weekend trips.

Nothing is perfect, and these pieces of luggage certainly aren’t. The front pocket is incredibly convenient, but loading it with heavier electronics does make the suitcase feel a little unbalanced when you’re lifting it. Another thing is, after a few trips the carry-on has picked up its fair share of surface scratches. The weekender can also feel a little bulky when I’ve packed it to the brim, especially on smaller regional flights where under-seat space is limited. None of these have been deal-breakers for me, but they’re worth knowing before you buy.

That said, if I were starting from scratch today, I’d buy this exact combination again without hesitation. They’ve made packing simpler, kept me organized, and held up through years of travel without giving me a reason to look elsewhere. There are certainly more premium options out there, but for the price, functionality, and reliability, I genuinely think this is one of the best carry-on setups you can put together.

Happy wandering!
